Former PA high school athletes are performing well at the NCAA Division I Championships in California. On Saturday, Coughlin grad and North Carolina's Justin Ryncavage won the men's Javelin with a throw of 243.04. Thomas Jordan (Coastal Carolina/Cedar Crest) was 7th, while Anthony Bonura (Pittsburgh/Plum) was 8th. In the 400 Hurdles, Dominique Darden (Miami/Harrisburg) and Nicole Leach (UCLA/West Catholic) went 3-4, each moving up a spot after apparent winner Melaine Walker of Texas was DQed. Michael Whitehead (Michigan/Norristown) captured 2nd in the Triple Jump with a leap of 53-11.25.In the 4x400, according to CBS, Juanita Broaddus (LSU/William Penn) broke open the 4x400 on the 3rd leg. Krista Simkins (Miami/Wissahickon) opened, and Dominique Darden (Miami/Harrisburg) anchored for the 2nd place team. I attempted to pick out all the PA alumni competing. Former PA high school athletes are performing well at the NCAA Division I Championships in Sacramento, California. The meet kicked off Wednesday with Dominique Darden (Miami/Harrisburg) taking a leg of the advancing 4x100, Brian Mondschein (Virginia Tech/Hershey), moving on in the Pole Vault, Sheena Gordon (North Carolina/McDowell) in the High Jump, Molly Landreth (Penn State University/Liberty) in the 3000m Steeplechase, and Maureen McCandless (Pittsburgh/Nazareth Academy), in the 5000. Ashley Kaufman (Akron/Freedom) advanced in the women's Javelin. On Thursday, it was Justin Ryncavage (North Carolina/Coughlin), Thomas Jordon (Coastal Carolina/Cedar Crest), and Anthony Anthony Bonura (Pittsburgh/Plum) advancing in the Javelin, Darden in the 400 Hurdles, Frances Koons (Villanova/Allentown Central Catholic) in the 1500, Sam Bair (Pittsburgh/Shaler), also in the 1500, and Krista Simkins (Miami/Wissahickon) helping her 4x400 advance, as did Juanita Broaddus (LSU/William Penn). On Friday, Juanita Broaddus (LSU/William Penn) took a leg on the 2nd place 4x100 team. Darden joined Simkins to help Miami finish 7th in that race. Michael Whitehead (Michigan/Norristown) advanced to the finals of the Triple Jump. Sheena Gordon (North Carolina/McDowell) took 2nd in the High Jump, clearing 6-01.25. Brian Mondschein (Virginia Tech/Hershey) cleared 17-10.50 to take 4th in the Pole Vault. Juanita Broaddus (LSU/William Penn), Krista Simkins (Miami/Wissahickon), and Dominique Darden (Miami/Harrisburg) helped their respective 4x400's advance to the finals. Darden will be joined by Nicole Leach (UCLA/West Catholic) in the 400 Hurdles Finals after both advanced. Molly Landreth (Penn State/Liberty) finished 14th in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, going 10:30.96. And Maureen McCandless (Pittsburgh/Nazareth Academy) was 7th in the 5000 with her 16:14.10. And Freedom grad Ashley Kaufman of Akron, finished 8th in the women's Javeline with a throw of 160-00.
